Frederic Sorrieu 1st print of series
In 1848,frederic sorrieu, a french artist ,prepared a sereis of four prints visualising his dream of a world madevup of 'democratic and social Republic', as he called them. The first print of the series( displayed at the top) , shows the peoples of europe and america - men and women af all age and social class - marching in a long train , and offering homage to the statue of liberty as they pass by it. As you would recall , artist of the time of french revolution personified liberty as female figure - here you can recognise the torch of enlightment she bears in one hand and the charter of right of man in the other. On the earth in foreground of image lie the shattered remains of the symbols of absolutist institution. In sorrieu's utopia vision, the people of the world are grouped as distinct nation, identified through their flags and national costume.
